Fremantle shock Cats, Sydney trump Crows

8 septiembre 2012 15:06

The Dockers won their first ever final in Melbourne - notching their most famous victory in the club's 15-year history - with a 14.12 (96) to 11.14 (80) triumph over the Cats.

Fremantle booked their spot in a sudden-death semi-final against Adelaide with the win, which came thanks to an outstanding first quarter.

Ross Lyon's side kicked five goals to none in the opening stanza and their pressure was incessant with Geelong turning the ball over at regular intervals.

The Cats threatened to come back at several stages of the match but Fremantle - led by skipper Matthew Pavlich, who finished with six majors and 14 marks and Michael Barlow (27 disposals, 11 tackles) - always had an answer.

Stephen Hill and David Mundy (21 disposals each) also played well while maligned backman Zac Dawson was sensational in keeping Geelong spearhead Tom Hawkins goalless.

For the Cats, their skipper Joel Selwood never threw in the towel, gathering a team-high 28 disposals while Jimmy Bartel and Corey Enright (26 disposals each) found plenty of the football.

But they could never overcome the damage the Dockers inflicted in the first quarter as Lyon's men notched a fully deserved victory.

Earlier, the Swans also recorded an away win as they defeated the Adelaide Crows 11.5 (71) to 5.12 (42) at AAMI Stadium.

After an even start, Sydney won the match in the second quarter as they kicked five goals to one to open up a 25-point lead at the main break.

And although the Crows battled valiantly, they could never get within three goals as John Longmire's side booked a home preliminary final against either Collingwood, West Coast or North Melbourne.

Ryan O'Keefe (37 disposals) and Josh Kennedy (35 disposals) were prominent for the winners, while Adam Goodes, playing his 21st final, was the most influential player on the park early as he kicked three early goals.

Mitch Morton and Lewis Jetta also chipped in with two goals for Sydney as a home crowd of 44,849 went home disappointed.

Soctt Thompson (28 disposals) and Rory Sloane (24 disposals) tried hard for the losers, who lost key defender Daniel Talia (broken arm) to injury.

Sydney utility Ben McGlynn (hamstring) also suffered injury and is likely to miss the rest of the finals series.
