Brisbane shock Eagles, Magpies cruise

3 junio 2012 11:48

In a grandstand finish, substitute Josh Green booted three crucial goals in the final term before James Polkinghorne kicked the winner with a mongrel punt from outside 50 with under a minute-and-a-half left.

Jack Darling had almost clinched it for the Eagles just moments earlier with a soccer off the ground as he and defender Niall McKeever hurtled towards the goal line, but the Irishman got the faintest of touches on the ball.

The loss was just the Eagles second of the season and they will feel they did everything to collect the four points after leading by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.

In other results on Sunday, last year's runners-up Collingwood made it seven wins in a row with a ruthless 97-point victory over a hapless Gold Coast at the MCG.

On a weekend where the other premiership contenders in West Coast, Essendon and Carlton all suffered shock losses to bottom-five sides, the Magpies emerged as the real deal with a systematic 23.11 (149) to 7.10 (52) victory.

Gary Ablett's record-equalling disposal tally of 53 did little to prevent the Suns from recording the worst start to a season by any AFL team since Fremantle began 2001 with 17 consecutive losses.

Sydney stayed in touch with the top four after bouncing back to form in emphatic fashion with a 92-point win over the Western Bulldogs at a wet SCG.

In a game that was expected to be tight in the greasy conditions, the Swans blew the match wide open in a devastating first term, booting nine goals straight to the Bulldogs' one.

The blistering first quarter set up a comfortable 46-point lead at half-time, which the home side turned into a whopping 20.12 (132) to 5.10 (40) victory.

The win keeps Sydney in fifth place on the ladder - just four points behind the top four sides - and was the perfect way for Heath Grundy to celebrate his 100th game in the AFL.
