Mets GM hasn´t ´ruled out´ trading deGrom, Syndergaard

7 noviembre 2018 05:07

Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard are not on the trading block yet, but new New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen is not against the idea of moving either starter.

DeGrom is coming off a season where he set the MLB record for the most consecutive starts allowing three earned runs or fewer. He has two years of arbitration remaining before he can become a free agent in 2021.

Syndergaard has dealt with injury issues each of the last two seasons, but he is also under team control for a good amount of time, as he cannot become a free agent until 2022.

"I haven't ruled out anything," Van Wagenen told reporters at the GM meetings on Tuesday.

"I think that's one of the messages we've tried to give to the teams and to... agents. We're going to be open-minded to all scenarios."

Players with remaining years of arbitration can deliver a lot in trades. Gerrit Cole returned four players, including three with MLB experience, along with a prospect, when he was dealt last year with one year of arbitration remaining.

Van Wagenen said he has considered the possibility of dealing good players to help down the road.

"I think with the mission statement to win now and in the future, I think the goal is to find players that can help us do that," he said, via SportsNet New York.

"And that may be finding players of no consequence in a trade or that may be that we have to give something in order to get return, but we'll keep our eyes on all of those things."

The Mets went 77-85 in 2018, finishing in fourth in the National League East.
