Alex Bregman blasted a grand slam for the Houston Astros in MLB, while the St Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs.
Derek Jeter brought the crowd at Yankee Stadium to its feet as the club retired his number two jersey and enshrined him with a plaque in Monument Park during a special pre-game ceremony.
But the Astros' rising star, Bregman, who wears number two in honour of Jeter, hit his first career grand slam in a 10-7 Houston win against the New York Yankees.
The Astros took three of four from the Yankees, having been beaten 11-6 in the first half of the double-header earlier in the day.
The Cardinals sent defending champions the Cubs below .500 thanks to a 5-0 shut-out win.
Elsewhere, the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Seattle Mariners 3-2, the Miami Marlins overcame the Atlanta Braves 3-1, the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 8-3 and the San Francisco Giants claimed an 8-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
The Tampa Bay Rays thrashed the Boston Red Sox 11-2, the Milwaukee Brewers rallied past the New York Mets 11-9, the San Diego Padres went down to the Chicago White Sox 9-3 and the Kansas City Royals battled past the Baltimore Orioles 9-8.
The Texas Rangers had a 6-4 win over the Oakland Athletics, the Los Angeles Dodgers were beaten 9-6 by the Colorado Rockies and the Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1.
The Pittsburgh Pirates needed 10 innings to overcome the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 and the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies split their double-header.
CARDINALS CRUSH CUBS
Yadier Molina homered twice and Adam Wainwright threw seven shutout innings as the Cardinals blanked the Cubs.
Not only did Kevin Pillar make another highlight-reel defensive play but he also homered with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Toronto a four-game sweep of the Mariners.
The Mets have now lost four straight after their bullpen spoiled a decent start by Jacob deGrom. The Brewers scored 10 runs over their final three innings, teeing off on Jerry Blevins, Fernando Salas, Josh Edgin and Addison Reed.
DODGERS AT GIANTS
Just one game ahead of being tied for last in the National League (NL) West, the Giants (15-24) open an important early-season series with the rival Dodgers (22-16). A pair of veteran right-handers square off Monday as Matt Cain (2-1, 4.54 ERA) hosts (Brandon McCarthy (3-0, 3.10 ERA).
