Maple Leafs stayed optimistic about signing Nylander

The Toronto Maple Leafs have finally signed 22-year-old center William Nylander and they got it done about five minutes before Saturday's deadline.

But general manager Kyle Dubas said he was never overly concerned.

"We always tried to stay optimistic," Dubas told reporters on Saturday, via TSN.

"We had our process and we have a great staff... It wasn't really an emotional experience."

Nylander signed a six-year deal worth nearly $42million. Toronto have now tied up a combined $119m between the young center and second-line center John Tavares, who they signed this offseason.

Auston Matthews – the 2016 first overall pick – remains unsigned long-term by the Maple Leafs, as does 2015 fourth overall pick Mitch Marner.

But Dubas was insistent the team will do all they can to lock those players up for the future.

"We hope all these guys will be career Leafs," Dubas said. "That's our goal, is to keep it together."
