Bellamy celebrates new Storm deal with a win

Melbourne Storm enjoyed a super Sunday in the NRL as head coach Craig Bellamy signed a new three-year contract just an hour before a 28-10 defeat of Newcastle Knights.

Bellamy, the Storm's coach since 2003, has won two titles with the club, yet there had been speculation that he could return to Brisbane Broncos, where he was previously an assistant.

However, as expected, the 58-year-old instead put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him in Melbourne until 2021.

"It would've been pretty hard to leave the players. I'm very close to the group here and that was one of the reasons I decided to stay," Bellamy said in a statement.

And those players quickly repaid their coach's faith, with Ryley Jacks opening the scoring in Newcastle and New South Wales starlet Josh Addo-Carr cancelling out a response from Kalyn Ponga.

Again the Knights had a riposte, with Ken Sio crossing early in the second half, but Addo-Carr got his second and a Suliasi Vunivalu try made the game safe with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Elsewhere, there was another comfortable away win, as Canberra Raiders downed Wests Tigers 48-12 in a one-sided mid-table clash.

The Raiders scored nine tries, with braces for Joseph Leilua and Joseph Tapine after the hosts had made a strong start, crossing twice in the opening quarter of an hour and leading at half-time.

Josh Hodgson came to the fore, returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in last year's World Cup. He set up three tries to turn the game on its head for Canberra.
