Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith underwent successful surgery on his broken leg on Monday and is expected to make a full recovery.

Smith suffered a broken tibia and fibula in a 23-21 defeat against the Houston Texans on Sunday and was scheduled to undergo surgery right away.

The 34-year-old did the damage while being sacked in the third quarter and was replaced by Colt McCoy under center.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden revealed the operation went well and confirmed Mark Sanchez will be back-up quarterback to McCoy.

Gruden said Smith is expected to be out for between six and eight months.
