Regular Season:

Format:
168 teams, divided into 6 groups of 18 teams each (Girone A-D and H-I) and 3 groups of 20 teams (E-G) on regional basis.
Each team plays against all the teams from its own group twice - home and away - for a total of 34 games each, over 34 game weeks (38 games each, over 38 game weeks for teams from 20-team groups).

Regional span:
Girone A: Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Liguria and Lombardy;
Girone B: Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol;
Girone C: Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto;
Girone D: Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany;
Girone E: Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio;
Girone F: Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche and Molise;
Girone G: Campania, Lazio and Sardinia;
Girone H: Apulia, Basilicata and Campania;
Girone I: Calabria, Campania and Sicily.

Scoring points:
3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

Table order:
1. points won; 2.play-off (only for deciding promotion, relegation or play-off participation) 3. points in head-to-head matches; 4. goal difference in hth matches; 5. goals scored in hth matches; 6. total goal difference; 7. total goals scored; 8. draw.

Relegation to the league:

Promotion from the league:
1 place of each group: promoted to Serie C and qualify for Scudetto Dilettanti

Qualification for Play-off:
2-5 place of each group: enter Play-off

17-18 place of each group: relegated to Eccellenza

Relegation from the league (Groups E-G):
15-18 place of each group: enter a Relegation Play-out

Play-off:
------------

Format:
36 teams from the Regular Season contest ranking for possible promotion to Serie C in case of vacancies in a knockout format.

1st Round:
Within each Regular Season group, teams are paired according to their Regular Season placing:
2nd vs 5th;
3rd vs 4th.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time if score is level after regular time and the higher placed teams progressing if score is still level after extra time.
The higher placed teams from the Regular Season are hosts.

2nd Round:
Within each Regular Season group, the two 1st Round winners meet each other.
Winners are decided over one leg, with extra time if score is level after regular time and the higher placed teams progressing if score is still level after extra time.
The higher placed teams from the Regular Season are hosts.


Scudetto Dilettanti:
------------

Format:
9 teams from the Regular Season contest the Serie D champion in a league format.
The 9 teams are divided into 3 groups of 3 teams each (Girone 1-3).
Each team plays against all the teams from its own group once - for a total of 2 games each, over 3 game weeks.

Scoring points:
3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

Table order:
1. points won; 2. points in head-to-head matches; 3. goal difference in hth matches; 4. goals scored in hth matches; 5. total goal difference; 6. total goals scored; 7. draw.

Qualification for Semi-finals:
1 place of each group: qualifies for the Semi-finals
best 2nd placed team: qualifies for the Semi-finals

Tie-breakers for determining best 2nd placed teams:
1. points won; 2. total goal difference; 3. total goals scored; 4. draw.

Semi-finals:
4 teams are drawn into 2 pairs.
Teams from the same Scudetto Dilettanti group cannot be drawn against each other.
Winners are decided over one leg, with penalties if score is level after regular time.
Matches are played at neutral venues.

Final:
The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming Serie D champion.
Winner is decided over one leg, with penalties if score is level after regular time.
Match is played at a neutral venue.


Relegation Play-out:
------------

Format:
36 teams from the Regular Season contest 18 places in Serie D in a knockout format.

Finals:
Within each group, teams are paired according to their Regular Season placing:
13th vs 16th (or 15th vs 18th for 20-team groups);
14th vs 15th (or 16th vs 17th for 20-team groups).
Winners are decided over two legs.
The higher placed teams from the Regular Season host the second legs.

Tie-breakers for the Relegation Play-out Finals:
1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. higher Regular Season placing.

Gap between teams:
If at the end of the Regular Season the higher placed team in any of the ties is 8 points or more ahead of its opponent, then no Relegation Play-out takes place between those two teams and the lower placed team is directly relegated to Eccellenza.
