Participation:
------------

27 teams participate in the competition:
- 17 of the 18 Liga MX teams (the 10 teams with the best last season record);
- 10 of the 16 Ascenso MX teams (the 10 teams with the best last season record).


Apertura - Group stage:
------------

Format:
27 teams are drawn into 9 groups of 3 teams each (Groups 1-9).
Each team plays the others from its own group twice - home and away - for a total of 4 games each, over 6 game weeks.

Scoring points:
3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

Table order:
1. points won; 2. total goal difference; 3. total goals scored; 4. points in head-to-head matches; 5. goal difference in hth matches; 6. goals scored in hth matches; 7. total away goals scored; 8. better Liga MX or Ascenso MX placing from last season; 9. fairplay ranking; 10. draw.

Qualification for the Knockout stage:
1 place of each group: qualify for the Knockout stage
the seven best 2nd placed teams: qualify for the Knockout stage

Tie-breakers for determining best 2nd placed teams:
1. points won; 2. total goal difference; 3. total goals scored; 4. total away goals scored.


Apertura - Knockout stage:
------------

Format:
16 teams from the Group stage contest the Apertura winner in a knockout format.
Teams are ranked 1st-16th according to their Group stage performance.

Ranking Table order:
1. points won; 2. total goal difference; 3. total goals scored; 4. total away goals scored; 5. better Liga MX or Ascenso MX placing from last season; 6. fairplay ranking; 7. draw.

8th Finals:
Teams are paired according to their ranking:
1st vs 16th (match 1);
2nd vs 15th (match 2);
3rd vs 14th (match 3);
4th vs 13th (match 4);
5th vs 12th (match 5);
6th vs 11th (match 6);
7th vs 10th (match 7);
8th vs 9th (match 8).
Winners are decided over one leg, with penalties if score is level after regular time.
If both teams from a pair are from Liga MX or Ascenso MX, the team with the higher ranking is host.
If teams from a pair are from different levels, the Ascenso MX team is host.

Quarter-finals:
Teams are paired as follows:
winner match 1 vs winner match 8 (match A);
winner match 2 vs winner match 7 (match B);
winner match 3 vs winner match 6 (match C);
winner match 4 vs winner match 5 (match D).
Winners are decided over one leg, with penalties if score is level after regular time.

Semi-finals:

If teams from a pair are from different levels, the Ascenso MX team is host.

Final:
The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming Copa MX Apertura winner.
Winner is decided over one leg, with penalties if score is level after regular time.
If both finalists are from Liga MX or Ascenso MX, the team with the higher ranking is host.
If the finalists are from different levels, the Ascenso MX team is host.

Qualification for Supercopa MX:

Clausura - Group stage:
