Oates inspires Broncos victory over Rabbitohs

Corey Oates stole the show as Brisbane Broncos produced a second-half fightback to beat South Sydney Rabbitohs 24-20 in the NRL on Thursday.

Winger Oates staked his claim for a State of Origin call-up with an influential display at ANZ Stadium, scoring a superb solo try as the Broncos responded to their defeat to Melbourne Storm with a hard-earned victory.

The Bunnies led 12-6 at half-time, Cody Walker dotting down after Jack Bird made a mess of an Adam Reynolds grubber kick and Alex Johnston taking a pass from Greg Inglis - playing his 250th NRL match - to cross in the left corner after Darius Boyd finished off a slick Broncos move.

Wayne Bennett's side raised their game in the second half, Kodi Nikorima darting through a gap to scamper over from dummy-half, but Reynolds' penalty put the Rabbitohs back in front.

The lively Oates, whose kick gave Boyd the chance to score in the first half, took advantage of some shoddy defending to fend off four tackles and claim his eighth tries in six matches against Souths and James Roberts added a fourth try, Jamayne Isaako converting for a fourth time to give the Broncos a 10-point advantage.

John Sutton touched down with seven minutes to play, but Brisbane were not to be denied a win which put them level on eight points with their opponents.
