Tigers boost top-two hopes, Giants close in on fourth

Castleford Tigers boosted their chances of challenging for a home semi-final in Super League by defeating Warrington Wolves, while Huddersfield Giants closed in on the top four.

The Tigers moved above Warrington into third with a 28-18 victory at the Jungle that put Daryl Powell's side just one point adrift of Wigan Warriors, who face Catalans Dragons on Saturday.

An excellent pass from full-back Peter Mata'utia on his home debut set James Clare in for the opening score, and Junior Moors crossed before Greg Eden raced away with an interception for a magnificent finish in the corner to give the hosts a 16-0 lead at half-time.

Warrington – who face Catalans in the Challenge Cup Final next weekend - lost Mitch Brown to a suspected knee injury in the opening period but came out firing after the restart, Stefan Ratchford dotting down off a lovely chip from Kevin Brown and Bryson Goodwin diving over within 10 minutes of the restart.

Castleford refused to roll over, though. Eden completed his double and Mike McMeeken got in on the act off a short ball from Michael Shenton, with Ratchford's second coming too late to inspire another comeback attempt.

The Wolves' defeat means Huddersfield are just four points adrift of the top four following a 26-6 victory over Hull FC.

After a pointless first half at the John Smith's Stadium, the Giants scored four tries through Alex Mellor, Lee Gaskell, Ryan Hinchcliffe and Ukuma Ta'ai to make it six wins on the trot.
